PT PP Enhances Project Accuracy and Quality with Autodesk Construction Cloud
PT PP (Persero) Tbk is an Indonesian state-owned construction enterprise, based in Jakarta. Founded in 1953, it has been contributing to the development of the national economy for more than 70 years, having constructed several national mega projects, including power plants, bridges, and airports.
As the company grows and continues to innovate, it is leveraging digital technology to improve efficiency and productivity.
“After we identify new technology, we analyze where it can be applied in our business process, considering planning, project management, and field operation,” says Arief Rahman, Subject Matter Expert BIM at PT PP. “Then we run pilot projects using the technology. That way, we can be sure that technology is applied and working properly before making it mandatory in our project workflow.”
Overcoming the Limitations of Traditional Project Management
PT PP has used Autodesk products for many years – starting with BIM 360.
However, the use of a cloud-based collaboration platform was not always mandatory.
Before the widespread use of cloud-based collaboration, PT PP handled project management through more traditional means – often using paper – which resulted in delays due to human error and slowed decision-making.
“[Human error] was causing us trouble because we often lacked up-to-date information or the latest meeting minutes,” says Arief. “Information was sometimes missed if teams relied on emails to share project updates.”
These errors and delays would have a knock-on impact on field operations, sometimes leading to costly rework.
“The issues can be summed up as project management problems – collaboration and communication,” says Arief. “Autodesk Construction Cloud lets us bridge those issues with a single source of truth – it has solved many issues with project management and field management.”
Uniting the Office and the Field
As more clients become aware of the power of cloud collaboration software, using these platforms is often compulsory. PT PP, in consultation with its stakeholders, has determined that Autodesk Construction Cloud is its platform of choice – and mandates that its suppliers and subcontractors use it, too, to maximise efficiency from design through to handover.
Arief describes how many aspects of the construction process have been improved since the widespread adoption of Autodesk Construction Cloud across the company’s projects.
Firstly, meetings are simultaneously less frequent and more productive. This is in large part because multiple stakeholders can operate in the same model, allowing for greater efficiency.
“We used to have a separate meeting for each of our stakeholders, and each stakeholder would need its own version of the model, or the data. Now, all our stakeholders can collaborate on the same model at the same time,” he adds.
Issues can also be tracked more effectively, both in the office and in the field, leading to faster resolution in time and resources.
On-site progress can also be tracked more efficiently and effectively in the field.
Improvements in Timelines, Quality, and Safety
PT PP has realised several measurable benefits through using Autodesk Construction Cloud.
Arief estimates that the business has seen an improvement in accuracy of around 20-25%, depending on the project’s complexity.
“Thanks to better planning, we’ve also seen a reduction in waste of materials of around 10–20%, and a reduction of reworks, thanks to improved clash detection,” he says.
All this leads to a reduction in costs.
Rework in particular is important to PT PP, because a number of its KPIs are related to quality, and partly measured by the quantity of rework.
Arief says there are many other benefits and outcomes that PT PP has seen thanks to its adoption of Autodesk Construction Cloud, including:
- Project timelines The platform has helped with scheduling, planning, progress tracking, and keeping projects on track.
- Cost efficiency Autodesk Construction Cloud helps PT PP monitor project expenses and ensures it can bill accurately.
- Safety performance PT PP uses Autodesk to identify and mitigate on-site risks by raising awareness of potential hazards, sharing them with on-site teams, and improving record keeping and knowledge sharing.
On one particular project, PT PP achieved the following improvements to KPIs:
Looking to the future
PT PP continues to innovate and values Autodesk’s expertise and insight.
“Working with a partner like Autodesk is crucial for our organisation because it provides us with cutting-edge technology and industry expertise. They also have a strong global support network,” says Arief.
He also commends Autodesk’s commitment to innovation, which is aligned with PT PP’s vision for digital transformation in the Indonesian construction industry.
“Autodesk Construction Cloud is a valuable tool that can help a company like ours achieve greater efficiency, productivity, and sustainability. We are committed to leveraging the technology to deliver the highest quality projects that meet our client expectations and contribute to Indonesian infrastructure development.”
